What is Ayurveda?
Introduction to Ayurveda
Ayurveda, a traditional medical system that has its roots in India over 5,000 years ago, offers a holistic approach to health and wellness. The term “Ayurveda” is derived from the Sanskrit words “ayur” (life) and “veda” (science or knowledge), reflecting its profound understanding of life and health. Unlike conventional western medicine, Ayurveda emphasizes the interconnectedness of the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of our being. Today, Ayurvedic medicine is widely practiced in India, with about 80% of the population, utilizing it in some form.

Central to Ayurveda is the concept of prakriti, or individual constitution, which is composed of three doshas: vata, pitta, and kapha. These doshas govern various physiological and psychological functions, and maintaining their balance is key to achieving optimal health. An imbalance in any of the doshas can lead to health issues and illnesses and ultimately diseases, affecting both physical and mental health. By recognizing and addressing these imbalances, Ayurveda aims to restore harmony and promote overall well-being.

Each dosha controls different body functions and aspects of personality. Vata dosha is associated with movement and controls breathing, blood flow and waste elimination. Pitta dosha controls digestion, metabolism and appetite. Kapha dosha is involved in muscle growth, strength, stability and the immune system. Ayurvedic practitioners seek to help individuals find a balance among all three doshas,

Benefits of Ayurvedic Medicine
Ayurvedic medicine offers a multitude of benefits that extend beyond mere symptom relief, aiming to enhance overall health and wellness. One of the core principles of Ayurveda is promoting balance and harmony within the body and mind. This holistic approach can lead to improved digestion and metabolism, which are foundational to good health. Additionally, Ayurvedic practices are known to reduce stress and anxiety, fostering a sense of calm and mental clarity.
Ayurveda is often considered a form of complementary medicine, working alongside conventional treatments to enhance overall health and wellness. For those struggling with chronic conditions, Ayurveda provides valuable support. For instance, it has been shown to reduce inflammation and pain, making it beneficial for conditions like rheumatoid arthritis. Moreover, Ayurvedic medicine supports immune function, enhances sleep quality and aids in weight management. By addressing the root causes of health issues rather than the symptoms, Ayurveda offers a comprehensive path to wellness, including support for mental health and chronic diseases like diabetes.

Ayurvedic Medicines and Treatments
Ayurvedic medicines and ayurvedatreatments are designed to nurture the body and mind, promoting a state of balance and harmony. These remedies, crafted from a variety of plants and ayurvedic herbs such as turmeric, ginger, and ashwagandha, harness the healing power of nature to support health and wellness. Ayurveda treatments can be used as complementary approaches alongside standard medical care, offering potential benefits for overall health.

In addition to herbal medicines, Ayurveda offers a range of treatments tailored to individual needs. Ayurveda treatmentincorporates lifestyle interventions and natural remedies to restore balance. Ayurvedic treatments also includes therapeutic practices like massage with medical oils, yoga, meditation, and specific dietary changes. Meditation and yoga are integral parts of an Ayurvedic practice. Panchakarma, a comprehensive detoxification program, involves a series of treatments including massage, herbal remedies, and dietary adjustments to cleanse the body of toxins. Similarly, Rasayana is a rejuvenation program that focuses on revitalizing the body and mind through a combination of treatments, thus reducing stress.
These Ayurvedic treatments are not just about addressing physical ailments; they also aim to enhance mental clarity, reduce stress, and improve overall quality of life. Ayurveda considers the interconnectedness of the mind, body, spirit and environment.

Finding a Qualified Ayurvedic Practitioner
Finding a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner is crucial to ensure safe and effective treatment. Here are some steps to help you find a qualified practitioner:
-
Check Credentials: Look for a practitioner who has completed a recognized Ayurvedic training program and holds certification from a reputable organization. This ensures they have the necessary knowledge and skills to provide effective Ayurvedic treatments.
-
Experience: Consider a practitioner with experience in treating conditions similar to yours. An experienced Ayurvedic practitioner will be better equipped to understand your unique needs and tailor treatments accordingly.
-
Licensure: Check if the practitioner is licensed to practice in your state or country. Licensure indicates that the practitioner meets the regulatory standards required to provide Ayurvedic medicine.

Professional Memberships: Look for membership in professional organizations, such as the National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA) or the Ayurvedic Practitioners Association (APA). Membership in these organizations often signifies a commitment to maintaining high standards of practice.
-
Referrals: Ask for referrals from friends, family, or healthcare professionals who have experience with Ayurvedic medicine. Personal recommendations can provide valuable insights into the practitioner’s effectiveness and approach.
-
Initial Consultation: Schedule an initial consultation to discuss your health concerns and treatment options. This meeting will give you a sense of the practitioner’s approach and whether it aligns with your health goals.
By following these steps, you can find a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner who can guide you on your journey to optimal health and wellness.

About me
Hello Friends
I am Dr. Arlini Singh, an Ayurvedic Doctor and this is my story.....
I was not always an Ayurvedic Doctor and to be honest, I had only got to know about Ayurveda for the first time in my life in my thirties.
Growing up, it was my passion to be attorney and I had put myself through law school and then opened up my own law practice and was highly successful and happy. But then life happens ....
Fast forward to 2014, I awoke one morning covered in a horrible rash. It was red and ugly and very, very uncomfortable. As much as I tried to avoid scratching myself insanely, I just could not help myself. A visit to the dermatologist, confirmed that it was contact dermatitis, - which means that my skin was reacting to something that it had recently been in contact with. We put it down to a reaction to my laundry detergent as the rash was everywhere on my body, except the areas that are not covered by my clothes i.e. my face, hands and feet.
The dermatologist put me on Prednisone, which is medication used to suppress the immune system as the doctor believed that the immune system was over reacting to the detergent. However, Prednisone left me almost bedridden for the next 6 weeks. I was unable to get out of bed, unable to move, unable to even keep my head on my shoulders. I had no energy. Was just completely fatigued.
A little about myself here - I am a very active person. A go-getter. I can hardly even remember taking days off when I was sick and here I was the complete opposite of what I am normally like. I was worried and dead scared. What was happening to me?
At the insistence of my family, I was taken to the ER. Huge mistake but I didn't know that at the time. After a long wait, the ER physician, who it was evident, didn't know what to make of me, gave me a script for antibiotics. His reasoning was that as Prednisone suppresses the body's immune system, my body is now opened to all types of bacteria, so I rather protect myself with antibiotics.
We all know what antibiotics do to the body. So I didn't want to even buy the medication. Deeply disappointed, I went home - hoping to get answers but instead being so disappointed with the the treatment that I was receiving.
Back in my bed, with nothing to do but stare at the ceiling in despair, I decided to look for answers online.
And that is when I stumbled across Ayurveda.
I had never came across anything like Ayurveda. I was elated. I read as much as I could and the very same day, I decided that I wanted to study and practice Ayurveda and help others who were going through the frustration that I was going through and not getting answers.
According to Ayurveda, my reaction to my laundry detergent which I had been using for the last 20 years was due to a low immune system due to the recent stresses in my life. Neither the dermatologist nor the ER physician had even discussed stress or my diet or lifestyle with me. They both had treated just the symptoms only.
Ayurveda states that we all are unique and as such our medical treatment should be customized to our unique bodily constitution. A one size fits all approach in health care simply does not work. Treating symptoms only is unacceptable.
Studying Ayurveda, also opened up, to me the amazing world of herbs that heal. This is so fascinating. Medicine is in our food, our herbs, our plants, our lifestyle. We are all entitled to optimum health and Mother Nature, like a true mother has provided us with everything that we need.
If you have not already, I highly recommend that you subscribe to my newsletter. I promise not to flood your inbox.
